The company Metan Ltd. was founded on the 20th of August 1999 by SORPA bs, a Municipal Waste Management Company owned by Reykjavik City and the surrounding communities and the company Aflvaki Ltd., a community owned investment fund. The present owners (2008) are SORPA bs, Reykjavik Energy Invest (REI), N1, oil company in Iceland, and the Reykjavik Energy Company (OR).
SORPA bs is a Waste Management Company, which among other things, owns and operates the Álfsnes Landfill, serving the greater capital area. A requirement in the operational permit for the landfill is to collect the landfill gas and utilize if possible. If the gas can not be utilized it shall be flared/burnt. The main reason for the establishment / foundation of a separate company, Metan Ltd., was based on this requirement in the operational permit of SORPA bs.
The purpose of the company is to market and distribute energy in the form of electricity, raw gas (landfill gas) and upgraded methane as well as knowledge collection within the field of biogas/landfill gas utilization.
Metan Ltd. is a member of the European Natural Gas Vehicle Association (ENGVA).
The headquarters of Metan Ltd. are in Reykjavik, the Capital city of Iceland.
